India Needs More Than Just Special Schools — It Needs Special Education for Parents
🎒 Special Needs Schools Are Growing — But What About the Parents?
Across Indian cities today, special schools and inclusive education centers are growing steadily. Awareness about Autism, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, and other developmental conditions is far better than it was a decade ago. Parents are seeking therapies, professionals are being trained, and educators are stepping up.
But one critical piece of the puzzle is still missing — Where are the centers that train and empower the parents of special needs children?
India has hundreds of special schools. But how many centers exist specifically to coach, educate, and emotionally prepare the parents who are raising these children?
Sadly, the answer is — very few, if any.
👨👩👦 Our Story: From Despair to Hope
We say this not just as advocates, but as parents of a child with special needs.
When our son was just a year old, doctors told us — in no uncertain terms — that he was "a vegetable."
We were devastated. There was no map to follow, no expert guiding us. But we refused to give up. We began our own research, reached out to global resources, and started implementing structured early intervention.
With years of hard work and consistent use of tools like PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), and through a carefully tailored home environment, our son is today 28 years old, fully independent, and thriving.
It didn’t happen by magic. It happened because we, the parents, were trained and involved from day one.
🧭 Why Parent Training Must Come First
The first 3–6 years of a child’s life are the most crucial for brain development. Delays in diagnosis, confusion, or misinformation can have lifelong consequences.
While therapy sessions are important, what truly changes outcomes is this:
📌 An informed, confident parent who knows what to do at home, every day.
Unfortunately, most families:
Receive a diagnosis without direction.
Struggle to find reliable resources.
Fall into emotional and financial strain.
Wait too long for help — sometimes years.
🌱 Introducing MyKoshish.in — A Parent-led Mission
This is why we started MyKoshish.in — an initiative born from lived experience, not textbooks.
Our mission is to:
🎯 Train and guide parents through workshops and consultations.
🧠 Share practical, home-based strategies for communication and behavior.
💬 Build awareness about early intervention and communication tools like PECS.
🤝 Provide a support network for families starting out on this journey.
We want to be the support we never had — so that no parent has to walk this path alone or uninformed.
🛠️ What India Needs Now
To truly become an inclusive society, India needs to invest in parental education, not just schooling for children. Here’s what we recommend:
🌍 Parent Training Centers in every major city and district.
📚 Regional-language guides, videos, and toolkits for at-home intervention.
🏥 Early intervention awareness integrated into hospitals and clinics.
🧩 Government and CSR partnerships to fund long-term support for families.
Because when parents are empowered, children succeed.
And when families are educated, the entire community benefits.
💬 Final Words: You’re Not Alone
If you’re a parent facing a diagnosis, feeling lost or hopeless — we’ve been there.
If you're a teacher, doctor, policymaker, or therapist — we urge you to look beyond the child and ask: Are the parents equipped to carry this forward at home?
Let’s build a country where every parent knows what to do, from the moment their child is diagnosed.
